As international cooperation continues to deepen, the building of the “Belt and Road” has become one of the effective ways to eliminate infrastructure deficits in countries and to promote strong, inclusive growth for the global economy. In the process, technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) have further built on the resiliency and vigor of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The 5th China-Arab States Expo was held from August 19th through the 22nd with the theme of “Deepening economic and trade cooperation, jointly building the Belt and Road” in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. iFLYTEK’s Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President Mr. Duan Dawei was invited to attend the expo and delivered a keynote speech titled “Artificial Intelligence: Industry Development and International Cooperation” at the 2021 Online Silk Road Conference and the 2021 Yinchuan International Smart City Summit. Mr. Duan explored the social needs that AI could address and provided insights into the future development of AI.

Speaking on behalf of a leading company in China’s AI industry, Mr. Duan Dawei said: “From the supply side, AI can improve efficiency, improve supply quality, and achieve supply-side structural reforms; from the demand side, AI can promote balanced distribution of resources and enhance social justice and equity.”

Throughout the three stages of AI development—computing intelligence, perceptual intelligence, and cognitive intelligence—three elements are required; AI technology, big data and expertise, Mr. Duan Dawei said. “AI can be used along with big data to learn high-level expertise from human experts and form an intelligent system, to empower the grassroots groups and serve a wider range of social groups, especially the disadvantaged groups. While improving efficiency, AI has also promoted social justice to a greater level.” He emphasized: “Such an ‘iron triangle’ combination can eventually form an industry hyper brain, which can better implement industrial applications in the field of cognitive intelligence.”

From the aspects including smart education and smart healthcare, Mr. Duan Dawei presented iFLYTEK’s AI practices to complement weak links in social resources and enable more people to enjoy high-quality public services.

In the field of smart education, iFLYTEK focuses on classroom teaching in K12 schools to make high-quality educational resources fairer and more accessible. The company’s smart education products and systems cover the five learning stages of teaching, learning, examination, evaluation, and management to help teachers prepare targeted lessons and give work that accommodates students’ diversified learning needs and habits. Such individualized teaching in accordance with students’ aptitude has increased teaching efficiency by an average of 30 percent and reduced students’ ineffective time by 40 percent. “So far, iFLYTEK’s education products have been applied in 38,000 schools across the country, serving more than 100 million teachers and students in total, making more time for students’ well-rounded education,” Duan said.

In the field of smart healthcare, AI enables high-quality medical resources to achieve universal resource sharing. According to Mr. Duan, AI has achieved remarkable results in such fields as improving grassroots medical care and enhancing medical security. For example, iFLYTEK’s AI Medical Assistant provides grassroots doctors with services like assisted diagnosis and treatment, medication advice, intelligent follow-up visits, and chronic disease management, equipping them with AI to effectively treat and solving the problem of imbalanced distribution of high-quality medical resources.

“Starting from pilot projects in Anhui Province, iFLYTEK’s smart healthcare products have been applied in 25,000 grassroots medical institutions in 200 counties and districts across the country, covering nearly 90 million residents. Furthermore, iFLYTEK’s AI Medical Assistant has served 50,000 grassroots doctors and assisted in more than 200 million diagnoses, increasing the rate of rational diagnosis of grassroots doctors from 70 to 90 percent,” Mr. Duan said.

“AI will become an indispensable primary production tool for various industries in the age of intelligence, just like water and electricity in the industrial age and the Internet in the Internet era.”

After analyzing the situation of AI application and government support in China, Mr. Duan Dawei concluded: “The Chinese market can be said to be the best application market for AI in the world.” Whether it is the government initiative to develop “new infrastructure” including AI, the complete AI-supported manufacturing system, or the highly effective AI hardware supply chain system, they all show that China is undoubtedly a fertile land for AI development. “During the epidemic, in particular, AI technology from China has played an outstanding role in international cooperation,” he added.
iFLYTEK’s smart translators

For example, in February 2020, iFLYTEK’s smart translators helped Russian authorities with cross-language communication in epidemic prevention and control work at the Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport. On March 24, 2020, the iFLYTEK AI Outbound Call System for Epidemic Prevention and Control was launched in South Korea, effectively promoting epidemic screening, prevention, and control in the country. On July 21, 2020, iFLYTEK reached agreement with the Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Computing Applications Center of the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) on cooperation projects in Arabic speech recognition, speech synthesis, and Chinese-Arabic translation, laying a solid foundation for future communication between China and Arab states.

At the end of his speech, Mr. Duan said that iFLYTEK will, guided by the huge demand in China’s AI market and supported by China’s mature practices in AI application, embrace global AI industry and conduct two-way cooperation.

“In the future, we will confidently share our ‘Chinese experience’ in AI application with the world and also welcome technologies and products from other countries to polish and upgrade in the Chinese market. We hope that AI will play a greater role in helping the Belt and Road Initiative boost interconnectivity,” he said.
