iFLYTEK’s Smart Tibetan Language Applications Facilitate Smooth Communication

Over the years, iFLYTEK and its partners have developed multiple automatic translation applications to aid smooth communication between the Tibetan and Han communities.

The software “Zangyitong”, for example, uses artificial intelligence (AI), speech recognition, and speech synthesis technologies to enable real time translation between Tibetan and Mandarin. The application is the product of a partnership between the Tibet Gaochi Science and Technology Information Industry Group Co., Ltd, Tibet University, and iFLYTEK to research possible applications of intelligent speech technologies for translating between Tibetan and Mandarin.

In 2021, based on its intelligent speech technologies on the U-Tsang and Amdo Tibetan dialects, iFLYTEK achieved an innovative breakthrough in its research on the Khams Tibetan dialect that made it possible to develop speech recognition capabilities for the three major Tibetan dialects.

Then based on its Tibetan language recognition and transcription technologies, the company developed the first input method that enables Tibetan speech recognition—the Dungkar IME. Unlike traditional input methods, the Dungkar IME supports both voice and handwriting input, in addition to input using the keyboard. The technology has been widely adopted in the Tibet Autonomous Region and the neighboring Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces.

iFLYTEK’s applications Zangyitong and the Dungkar IME are expected to aid the Tibetan and Han people better connect with each other, further promote common development, and contribute to protection of the minority culture. iFLYTEK will continue developing new technologies to break down seemingly impassable communications barriers through the utilization of systematic innovation and application of technology.
